Fleet parish church of St Mary Magdalene has stood witness to the Christian faith over a millennium. The separate tower stands witness to the wisdom of monastic builders who conquered the instability of underlying silt so successfully. Among ancient fenland settlements reclaimed from the Wash in south Lincolnshire, Fleet encompasses Fleet Hargate where most of the 1800 inhabitants live. About 8 miles east of Spalding and 13 miles south of Boston, Fleet is just off the A17 between Holbeach and Gedney almost 15 miles from King’s Lynn in Norfolk.
Once surpassing Spalding in population and wealth Fleet was the focus of Templar activities in medieval East Elloe with a yearly fair and vigorous market for centuries. The demise of Fleet Haven amid further reclamation caused Fleet’s withdrawal from the limelight into comfortable obscurity as a pleasant rural community within a rich horticultural environment.
